How to Choose an Interior Designer, and the 6 Questions to Ask Before Beginning a Project - Part 1

Deciding to hire a full-service interior designer is no small feat. It's like trusting a hairstylist to give you a new 'do or letting your best friend cut your bangs after a few too many glasses of wine. Your home is a reflection of who you are, so it's crucial to find someone who gets you and can bring your vision to life. My tip? Don't be afraid to play the field! Interview a few different designers to see who vibes with your style and personality. To get you started, here are four tips to help you find your design soulmate!

Do You Love Their Work?

Take a moment to visit their website and peruse their portfolio. Do you adore their work? If not, it's time to move on! It's true that interior designers can work with any design style. However, just like doctors specialize in certain fields, designers also have their areas of expertise. They can work their best magic when they stick to what they know best. It's important that their aesthetic matches your project objectives. It's like going to a dentist for a physical exam; it just wouldn't work. Don't expect an eclectic and colorful outcome from a designer with a neutral and minimalistic style.

Do They Make You Feel Understood?

As you begin your search for an interior designer, it's important to take advantage of the complimentary call that most designers offer. This is a chance for you to discuss your design objectives with them and get a sense of their process and how they can assist you. During the call, pay attention to how well the designer listens to you and understands your vision. Did you feel heard and understood? If not, it may be time to look for another designer who truly "gets" you. After all, your designer should make every effort to comprehend your vision and create a space that reflects YOUR style and personality. So, take the time to find a designer who shares your design aesthetic and understands your unique needs.

Will You Enjoy Spending Lots of Time With Them?

Think about it like this: would you want to grab a drink or coffee with this designer? If the thought of spending time with them makes you cringe, it's probably best to move on! You'll be working closely with them, so it's important to find someone whose company you enjoy. Plus, if you can't feel comfortable getting personal with them, how will they ever understand your unique style and personality? So, look for a designer who you can picture hanging out with and who makes you feel at ease. After all, designing your space should be fun and enjoyable!

What’s Your Initial Reaction?

Finally, always trust your instincts; they're usually right. If you love the designer's work, but something inside you is hesitant, listen to that little voice in your head. The end result may not be worth the stress and anxiety of working with someone who doesn't feel like the right fit for you. Of course, if you're the kind of person who enjoys a bit of challenge and struggle, then go ahead and take the plunge! Ultimately, it's your call, and you should do what feels right for you.
